Slowly but surely, we are checking off our hikes. The past couple of weeks have found me wanting to stick closer to home during the week, opting for walks and bike rides around our neighborhood and saving our bigger hikes for the weekends when Daddy can come with us (and chase around the three year old).
Our hikes are getting shorter as we waddle and toddle mile after slow-paced mile. That said, I’m incredibly proud of my boy, who now hikes every footstep on his own two feet, and myself, for keeping up the motivation into my last stretch of pregnancy.
Read on for my trail notes from hikes 33 through 36 of my 52 Hike Challenge!
In an effort to keep my trail notes from completely taking over Two Kids in Tow, I’m going to publish them in sets of four. To read all of my notes in order, click on the 52 Hike Challenge category in the right sidebar.
Hike 36/52: Captain Jack’s Trail
North Cheyenne Cañon | Colorado Springs, Colorado
Hike/Trail Name: Captain Jack’s Trail
Distance Traveled: 1.92 miles
Time: 1 hour 58 minutes
Elevation Gained: 339 feet
Date Completed: Sunday, January 24, 2016
North Cheyenne Cañon is very quickly becoming one of my favorite places to hike in Colorado Springs. In a little over 30 minutes, my family can go from our side of town to the canyon and feel like we are far, far away.
Today’s hike was especially fun for me because our baby’s name will be Jack. I really enjoyed watching Luke and Daddy run up and down the trail and imagining what it will be like to have our newest family member there with us. Captain Jack’s will be high on my list for hikes to do after our own Jack joins us in just a few more weeks!
Hike 35/52: Volksmarch Red Fox Trail
Fox Run Regional Park | Colorado Springs, Colorado
Hike/Trail Name: Volksmarch Red Fox Trail
Distance Traveled: 1.00 miles
Time: 58 minutes
Elevation Gained: 109 feet
Date Completed: Saturday, January 23, 2016
We finally got out of the neighborhood for a real hike! We’ve been sticking to neighborhood walks and bike rides for the last couple weeks for simplicity’s sake, so today’s hike was a welcome change of scenery. Luke and I broke 40 miles for January’s Hike it Baby Challenge today, too!
Hike 34/52: Petrified Forest Loop Trail
Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument | Florissant, Colorado
Hike/Trail Name: Petrified Forest Loop
Distance Traveled: 1.48 miles
Time: 1 hour 18 minutes
Elevation Gained: 57 feet
Date Completed: Saturday, January 9, 2016
We woke up this morning itching to run away to the mountains, so after breakfast, we threw on our layers, piled into the Jeep, and headed west to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument for our family hike. After examining the park map over peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the parking lot, we decided on an easy loop hike to see a number of petrified redwoods. It was freezing but sunny and Luke, Daddy, and I enjoyed slowly hiking through trees and and meadows and peering over the fences at the ancient tree stumps.
Hike 33/52: Lincoln Mountain Trail
Lincoln Mountain Open Space | Larkspur, Colorado
Hike/Trail Name: Lincoln Mountain Trail
Distance Traveled: 2.87 miles
Time: 3 hours 41 minutes
Elevation Gained: 253 feet
Date Completed: Tuesday, January 5, 2016
Toddler-paced hiking at its finest: less than three miles in almost four hours!
I finally got to meet a long-time Instagram friend on the trails today (the lovely @adventuresoffour!). We chatted about different places to hike in Colorado, a little about photography, and potty training (because you can’t be the mother of a toddler and not talk about potty training!). Luke and I had such a fun time and can’t wait to meet up with our new adventure friends soon!
