And just when I thought our pace had slowed down for good…
The extra long holiday weekend presented us with the perfect opportunity to go on many family adventures in the last week. Most of the trails we hiked in this set were new to us, and two of the parks and open spaces we visited were new to us as well. I’m looking forward to exploring more of these places as time goes on.
Read on for my trail notes from hikes 29 through 32 of my 52 Hike Challenge!
In an effort to keep my trail notes from completely taking over Two Kids in Tow, I’m going to publish them in sets of four. To read all of my notes in order, click on the 52 Hike Challenge category in the right sidebar.
Hike 32/52: Pine Ridge, Scrub Oak, Bear, and Yucca Trails Loop
Ute Valley Park | Colorado Springs, Colorado
Hike/Trail Name: Pine Ridge, Scrub Oak, Bear, and Yucca Trails Loop
Distance Traveled: 3.20 miles
Time: 2 hours 33 minutes
Elevation Gained: 282 feet
Date Completed: Monday, January 4, 2016
Today Luke completed his longest hike yet: 3.2 miles on his three year old feet. To say I’m a proud momma is an understatement.
It was a nice hike with a few moments of frustration. I try my hardest to give Luke plenty of time to stop and explore what he wants to along our route, to include scrambling up and down big rocks and jumping off of the tops (holding my hand, of course), but my patience wears thin when he ignores my requests for him to slow down and pay attention to what he’s doing. He often rushes his climbing because he thinks I’m going to pull him away. I’m more than okay with him climbing and scrambling and exploring – that, in fact, I want him to do those things – but I want him to slow down and pay attention. How to communicate that to a three year old is an elusive trick I have yet to figure out.
Hike 31/52: Spruce Mountain Trail
Spruce Mountain Open Space | Larkspur, Colorado
Hike/Trail Name: Spruce Mountain Trail
Distance Traveled: 2.67 miles
Time: 2 hours 24 minutes
Elevation Gained: 280 feet
Date Completed: Friday, January 1, 2016
We kicked off 2016 on the trails as a family. It was sunny and cold, the perfect day for a “first day” hike. Luke trampled through the snow with us up the side of Spruce Mountain, stopping to point out every dribble of dog pee along the trail. When we reached the Greenland Overlook, Luke scrambled over huge boulders and climbed a few trees. The descent went by much faster than the climb, as it usually does, and after hiking through the shade and dropping temperatures, we were very happy to make it back to the Jeep.

We celebrated the end of a crazy year with a “last day” family hike in our snowy mountains. We bundled up and hiked through the falling snow over seven wooden bridges that crisscrossed North Cheyenne Creek. It was a magical conclusion to 2015. Happy New Year!
