It seems our rockstar pace of 3-4 hikes per week has run its course! With winter slowly settling in and the third trimester of this pregnancy looming ever closer, I am content to throttle back a little bit from here on out. Luke and I are still logging lots of miles, thanks in part to our Hike it Baby 30, but most of them are walked on the paths around our neighborhood or on urban strolls with our local HIB branch instead of on hiking trails around town.

I really, really enjoyed this set of hikes. I added two new hikes to my short list of favorites – Templeton Trail in Palmer Park and Blackmer Loop Trail in Cheyenne Mountain State Park – and I plan to post more about these two trails in the next couple of weeks.

Read on for my trail notes from hikes 17 through 20 of my 52 Hike Challenge!

In an effort to keep my trail notes from completely taking over Two Kids in Tow, I’m going to publish them in sets of four. To read all of my notes in order, click on the 52 Hike Challenge category in the right sidebar.

Trail Notes

My very small handful of favorite favorite favorite hikes grew by one today.

Andy, Luke, and I took our sweet time exploring this beautiful trail in Cheyenne Mountain State Park. We wandered through beautiful meadows, groves of scrub oaks, and Ponderosa pine forests. We were passed by a few different groups of mountain bikers, trail runners, and fellow hikers. Luke hiked over a mile on his own two feet, scrambling up giant rocks and jumping into Andy’s outstretched arms. The boys took turns running ahead down the trail, hiding behind boulders, and scaring each other while I laughed at them from a few paces behind. The weather was gorgeous, sunny but breezy, and we thoroughly enjoyed our precious family time together.

Another visit to Palmer Park, this time with our local Hike it Baby branch. Luke hiked most of the trail on his own, examining rocks and cactus along the path, scrambling on rocks at our turnaround point, and running away from “bears” and “monsters” with our “Hike it Friends” the whole way back.

Attempt number two for the Templeton Trail loop in Palmer Park: success! I could post a bazillion photos from our hike today… I loved it that much. I’m so glad we decided to run out at the last minute and so grateful my sister came with us and snapped so many gorgeous photos of my boys and I. This hike will definitely go down as a favorite.

Trail Notes

Luke and I took Auntie Jaz with us to one of our favorite parks for a hike and some play time on the playground. I hauled Luke the first mile and he hiked the rest, highly motivated by the thought of the slide waiting for him at the end. We ate our post-hike snacks then played on the playground for almost an hour.
