Sometimes things don’t go as planned.
Sometimes you get off a little later than you hoped and sometimes there’s an hour of unexpected traffic along your route. Sometimes your toddler refuses to nap in the car and spends the last half hour of your journey screaming bloody murder. Sometimes you miss the correct parking lot and sometimes you can’t find the trailhead you set out for in the first place. Sometimes said toddler wants to poke around in the dirt next to the car instead of hiking. Sometimes you have a surprise encounter with a rattlesnake. Sometimes the time you spend at your destination is completely eclipsed by the time you spend in the car getting there and back.
Because although sometimes things don’t go as planned…
My son and I made memories scrambling on and off giant rocks. He squealed in delight as I flipped him over my head and onto my back, again and again and again. He inspected the beautiful desert flowers and watched as big black beetles scurried over the rocks on our path. We took huge gulps of fresh air and enjoyed simply being together.
That, my friends, makes every trip out worth it.
(And, tired out of his little mind, he slept the whole drive home.)
