The Devil’s Riding School | Ascension Island

We rounded the corner, but instead of turning left, as we did for our first Letterbox Walk, we turned right. In a matter of seconds, it felt as though we were on another planet. Brittle stones crunched under our feet, replacing the lush ferns that surrounded us on our earlier hike. Less than two and a half miles apart as the crow flies, these two corners of Ascension Island couldn’t have been more different.

Luke rode happily on my back as I scrambled along the loose path. The toddler-pitched rumble of miniature airplanes followed the crunching beneath my feet. We circled the rim of the crater and spotted the cache, perched carefully atop a hill of dirt and clinker. Awkwardly, I climbed to the top and took a moment to soak up the view.

We pulled out the log book, signed our names, and stamped Andy’s book. Another Letterbox Walk in the bag!
